The Logistic Squeeze (remix)

By Alexis Diamond · Statistics · Generalized Linear Models · Undergraduate · Computational / statistical · version 2

Remixed from The Logistic Squeeze

A logistic regression is a straight line on the logit scale, squeezed through the logistic function into a probability. This version adds a comprehension question and a reflection question at the bottom, each with a text box whose answer is captured in state, and fixes a colour-contrast failure.

Assumption ledger

  • simplificationOne predictor, no interaction term
  • parameterx in [-5, 5]; B0 in [-4, 4]; B1 in [-3, 3]; threshold in [0.05, 0.95]; defaults x = 1, B0 = 0, B1 = 1, threshold 0.5
  • dataNo data: the curves are the functions themselves, not a fit
  • distributionp = 1 / (1 + e^(-z)) with z = B0 + B1 x, i.e. the logit link for a binary outcome
  • simplificationThe dashed line on the probability panel is the tangent of the curve at p = 0.5 (slope 1/4 per unit of z), standing in for a straight-line prediction
  • interpretationThe threshold turns a probability into a 0 or 1 call; the artifact does not say which error is worse, and the reflection question asks the student to decide

Built-in checks 4 of 4 pass

  • p = 0.5 when z = 0 (passes)
  • p(z) + p(-z) = 1 (passes)
  • one-unit step moves p more near 0 than far out (B0=0, B1=1) (passes)
  • logit change per unit of x equals B1 (passes)
