Which Effect Does the Regression Estimate? Controlling for a confounder and the ATE, ATT and ATC
By Alexis Diamond · Statistics · causal inference · Undergraduate · Simulation of a known property · version 2
A hundred farmers, an irrigation pump, and the coefficient you get when you control for wealth: does the regression estimate the ATE, ATT or ATC? This revision makes every control shared state so breakout teammates see the same screen.

Assumption ledger
- parameter100 farmers; the number of rich farmers is chosen (default 50)
- distributionY0 = 10 + 5·rich + u, with u ~ Normal(0, 1) from a seeded generator; units are $1,000s
- parameterY1 = Y0 + the group's effect (defaults +6 rich, +0 poor); every farmer in a group has the same effect
- simplificationPumps go to exactly round(rate × group size) farmers per group, so wealth is the only confounder
- simplificationTrue ATE, ATT and ATC use both potential outcomes; estimates use only the observed harvest
- distributionThe regression is OLS of observed harvest on pump and rich with conventional SEs; the bar shows ±1.96 SE
- parameterRegression weight for a group = n·p·(1−p), normalized to sum to 1
- dataNo external data; the noise is generated in the browser, so estimates differ slightly from the R workbook (set.seed(104)); true ATE, ATT and ATC match it exactly
