Running a breakout with an artifact
- Open a published artifact and choose Start a breakout. Your teacher view opens.
- Post the class link (or show its QR code) in the main chat before opening breakouts. Students pick their room, or tap “Put me in any room”. No accounts are needed.
- From the teacher view you can change the number of rooms, set a timer, start a new round, put any room on the main display, replay a room’s moves, and export written answers to a Google Doc.
- Only the browser that started the session can change these settings, so use that browser to run the class.
Common questions
Do students need an account? No. They join from the class link; we never ask for their names.
Moves aren’t syncing. Reload the page. If it still fails, the network may block our session service (Google Firebase, *.firebaseio.com); some school networks do. Try another network or ask IT to allow it.
Two people typing in the same answer box? That works: edits merge as you type, like a shared document.
How long is session data kept? Twelve months from the start of the session, then it’s deleted automatically. You can delete a session sooner from the teacher view (Delete this session).
Can I use it inside Zoom? A Zoom app is being tested. Until then, share the class link in the Zoom chat; it works in every breakout room.
Accessibility
Every artifact is checked automatically against WCAG 2.1 A and AA rules when it’s created or imported, and the results are shown on its page. Automated checks don’t catch everything. If something stops you or your students from using an artifact, email hello@ideasatplay.org and tell us what happened.
